Meet Mrs. Ernest
I am so excited to be teaching first grade at Windy Hill Elementary School. My boys, Brandon and Bradley, attended Windy Hill and I LOVE TEACHING FIRST GRADE!
The 2018-2019 school year marks my 20th year teaching. My teaching career began in 1989, as a home teacher, teaching students with special needs while I was a senior at Towson University majoring in Mass Communications. I fell in love with teaching special education and I was graduating with the wrong major!
Immediately upon graduating from Towson University, I enrolled in a graduate degree program at The George Washington University and received my Master's Degree in Education and Human Development. After completing my Master's program, I began teaching special education in Prince George's County at North Forestville Elementary. I taught there for five years before I took time off from teaching to stay home to raise our two boys, Brandon and Bradley.
In 2004 I returned to teaching in Calvert County; I have taught at Windy Hill Elementary and Beach Elementary as a special education teacher, a reading intervention teacher, and a first grade teacher. My philosophy of teaching is one where the teacher is the raiser of self concept. It is my responsibility as a teacher to teach to the whole child; emotionally, behaviorally, and academically. I believe it is my responsibility as a teacher to create an environment where a child is inspired to learn and feels safe to take academic risks; to create a classroom where high expectations are set and kindness counts. I am so excited to have the opportunity to share first grade with you and your child!
I live in Owings with my husband Steve, our son Bradley, and our golden retriever, Summer. Our son, Brandon is completing his senior year of college at Farmingdale State College in New York. Bradley is completing coursework to become a teacher at the College of Southern Maryland with plans to transfer into the teaching program through the College of Notre Dame of Maryland. I also have a wonderful stepson, Brian, who is currently in a Doctoral Program for teaching special education at The George Washington University and teaches at the University while working on his degree.
When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my family! We can usually be found on a baseball field watching our boys play baseball. I love playing and watching sports (Orioles, Redskins, Caps, and Wizards Fan!). I also enjoy running for my "me" time. Most of all, my family loves spoiling our baby girl- Summer!
